If Portland didn’t get so cold I would 100% consider moving there! While we spent about four days in Portland, Maine with travel and wedding events it ended up being a lot less time for activities so I have condensed what we did into a little weekend trip plus some ideas for extending your trip in the area. For all my foodie recommendations check out this post.
What to do in Portland Maine
Portland Schooner Ride – We took a “sunset” schooner ride in the Portland Harbor aka Casco Bay and had the best time. Even though it was pretty cloudy, so not much of a sunset our captain was really fun and it’s BYOB. Portland Schooner offers a number of trips public and private all about 2 hours long. Plus, it’s BYOB so pack a bottle of wine, cups, and a little cheese plate and you are good to go!
Visit a Lighthouse – The New England coast is known for its Lighthouses and Portland is home to the most photographed one in the entire world, the Portland Head Light. Since we didn’t rent a car we ubered to the Portland Head Light which took about 15 minutes from downtown Portland. Once in the park, there are lots of trails, a coffee and ice cream truck, and two lobster trucks too.
However, if we had had more time and a car we would have scooted further south to the Two Lights Lighthouse, and then gone to Two Lights Lobster Shack for Lunch. My friend said these were the best lobster rolls and you get to sit outside right on the coast!
Shop & Explore Downtown Portland – Portland downtown is so cute with little cobblestone streets, old-world bars, breweries, and so many restaurants. You could easily spend an afternoon shopping and bar hopping.
Eat All the Lobster Portland is a foodie paradise! Besides all the seafood there are some amazing award-winning restaurants in the area too. I created a full guide to where to eat in Portland here but my two must-visits are Scales and Eventide Oyster Company.
Acadia National Park – I highly suggest renting a car and driving up the coast to visit Acadia National Park. The park is stunning and in the top 10 most visited parks in the US. The park offers easy mountain top and coastal trails, biking and like a million spots for the perfect picnic. While in the area you can visit the adorable coastal town of Bar Harbour too!
I can’t wait to go back and visit Portland and greater Maine! Any must-do things in Maine I forgot? Drop a comment!
