TL:DR – I love NPR and CPR and therefore love Podcast. I will now be sharing my favorite Podcast with you!
Becoming an avid NPR Listener
Growing up my dad always had National Public Radio (NPR) on in the morning on the way to school. When us kids would get to choose what we listened to I would switch to Star94 “Steve and Vicky in the morning”, Cliff would want Kicks 101.5 country and Spencer, my oldest brother, would turn the dial to 99X the grunge rock and roll station, remember this is the early 90s!
But most of the time it was NPR, even on the weekends. I grew up listening to Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me and Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion on weekend drives or road trips to the beach.
When I got my car in high school I was way more into my super cool mix CDs I had made from all the music we were illegally downloading than to listen to the radio. To this day I still have a 200 CD case filled with CD and mixes. But since it was my car I got to choose what stations were programmed. I started at 90.1, NPR and worked my way up.
When I drove into Dallas to move into SMU, I set the radio stations starting with 1 on NPR. From there I scanned up and programmed the next station my dial came across. A few months in I realized I had programmed mostly country and Hispanic stations along with a Dallas sports radio station.
I am a sports fan for sure but I could care less about Dallas professional sports, but somehow I always find myself listening to it. I knew really random stuff about the Cowboys and Mavericks. Which often helped in convos at the bar but every time I’d get in the car I’d find myself listening to sports radio! Why am I listen to sports radio!!?!
In DC I never drove, well ideally I never had to drive and if I did I had an iPod hook up so I was playing my jams. But in DC, your living in the swamp! You have to know whats going on in politics so slowly I started listening to more and more NPR. A boy I was seeing at the time also had a love affair with NPR. Especially with Car Talk, we spend many drives out to Virginia listening to the Tappet brothers.
When I first moved to Denver I reprogrammed my stations with NPR still at position one. I drove every day to work so NPR Morning Edition and Colorado Public Radio (CPR) programming became a daily routine. That morning routine stuck and now I rarely changed the dial unless I am hearing the same story again or it’s during a pledge drive. Sorry! But pledge early people, I want my news!
Early morning drives to the airport are for listening to reruns of Click and Clack or the latest news from CPR. Returning from the airport on Sunday afternoons means I can play along with the latest Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me.
Finally Finding Podcast
A few years ago I started taking the train to work more and more. I started to miss out on the news and my CPR programming. CPR is seriously the best state public radio. Their programming is on point.
So what does any of this have to do with Podcast? Well, let just say I’m late to the podcast party and now I am obsessed. I wish I had started listening on my morning commute years ago but I am now.
I made the connection recently with my new found love of podcast stems from my love for talk radio aka CPR/NPR. I should have known I’d love podcast!! Some of my favorite podcast still form NPR and CPR. I mean I can not listen to Wait Wait Don’t Tell me at any time!
Going forward every Friday in my Friday Vibes post I am going to be highlight one of my favorite podcast. Most episodes center around blogging and marketing but a lot are self-improvement and love, health and wellness and some well some are just really funny.
Let’s start with two of my favs podcast (so far)
My Favorite Podcast
The Joe Rogan Experience – If you are not already obsessed with Joe Rogan you need to will be. Yes, Joe Rogan that guy from fear factor, stand up comedian and MMA fighter. He is about to change your life. Joe has a curiosity and thirst for knowledge that makes him a truly wonderful conversationalist and even better producer. His guest range from scientist, artist, researchers, actors, doctors, MMA Fighters, conspiracy theorist and his favorite comedians. Each episode brings enlightenment and laughter, exactly what I am looking for in a podcast. My favorite thing about Joe and his podcast is that he is a really good person and wants everyone else to be happy and healthy.
Episodes to listen to:
Jamie Foxx – This episode is a little older but freaking hilarious. How Jamie Foxx started singing and the amazing house parties he throws.
Dr. Shawn Baker – This guy only eats meat and its fascinating
Chris Kressner – Mindblowing. Chris explains food and the crazy effects if can have on your body.
The Influencer Podcast – Julie Soloman is the “it girl” of influencer marketing. She is a veteran PR and blogger who has figured out how to be successful as in influencer. I’ll put her message very simply, to be an influencer you need to provide a service. If you wanna figure out exactly WHAT that service is and how to “sell it”, you need to listen to these podcasts. Some episodes focus more on the tactics, others on strategy but my favorites are the ones that focus on that inner development needed to help you discover your true brand and how you want to serve others.
Episodes to listen to:
Marie Forleo (my new hero), seriously she is so damn amazing and inspiring.
Be Well With Kelly – Health Guro – she breaks down whats good whats bad and why. Plus her fab five smoothie is life changing.
Amber Lilyestorm – Preach Amber! This is all about overcoming fear and figuring out who you are and what you wanna do
Both of these podcast has had a huge impact on my life. They have taught me things about myself, my diet and how to live a better more meaningful and productive life. They have also turned me on to so many other amazing podcasts I can’t wait to share them all with you!
I am always looking for new podcast so if you have on send it my way!
