On January 12th, 2016 I received an e-mail from Threadflip informing me that they were shutting down effective immediately… you can read the letter here. I had just started using Threadflips full service and was having some success so this is disappointing.
As an alternative to Poshmark, I recommend ThreadUp and TheRealReal as other consignment options.
I recently cleaned out my closet in an attempt to make some cash on Poshmark & Threadflip. These app consignment stores let you post items, set a price range and share with your community. I have sold one clutch and a pair of boots on Poshmark, but nothing on Threadflip.
Poshmark – The overall design, color and user interface leaves something to be desired.. The upload process is a little clunky but requires less info then Threadflip. Poshmark host “Posh Parties” where users share items for themed events like “Saturday Date Night Style”. This is a little confusing… you are alerted when the parties starts and only then can you share your items to the party. Not before the party or after the party, which last 2 hours. The parties go live on so you can shop that collection but adding to the party is only available for a 2 hour window.
Threadflip – The over all design has a much more polished and thought out experience than Poshmark. Threadflip has a feature like parties called “Trunk Shows”. There are only a few a week compared to Postmark’s onslaught of parties. Threadflip is defiantly higher-end with most parties being for designers only, Tory Burch, Kate Spade, J.Crew and Prada.
Both companies take a 20% cut of your sale. Poshmark shows what you will make when pricing items, which is a great feature. Poshmark & Threadflip also make available pre-made USPS shipping labels, to use with the free USPS flat rate boxes. On both the buyer pays the shipping fee.
Downside thus far, it takes time! Sharing someone else’s items is a way to get exposure, and gain followers. If you share something of their’s, it is likely they will return the favor. So it’s a daily upkeep. Some people want to trade or bundle and some users will offer $20 for an item priced at $60…
It’s been an interesting process so far but good! I hope to make some $$$ for all my upcoming trips this year. Do you have an app/site you love? I would love to test out a few others!
Shop my Poshmark Closet!
You should try out Bib + Tuck (www.bibandtuck.com)! They also have an iPhone app. Items sell really quickly and it’s a great, trustworthy community of great items. Far less cluttered than Threadflip or Poshmark in my experience. Hope this helps!
Just downloaded bib+tuck I will check it out tonight! Thanks!!
In case you’re interested in decluttering and not making money from your closet, try Swapdom (www.swapdom.com)! Super efficient exchange system where you simply choose what you want and offer what you’ve got in exchange. Thanks for the post!
Sounds cool – I will check it out! Thanks!
This is super helpful!! We’ve only tried ebay, but I want to check this out soon!
I am sure yall could make a killing on there!! Defiantly try it out!
Ive sold on Posh for about 2 yrs. Even tho I have sold alot on there…its way to time consuming, I just have enough hours to devote to online sales, i have a outside real job. Irecently closed my closet there, just to take a long break from Posh…I absolutely LOVE Tradesy tho…Sold a little but it runs itself, basically…and there is not the constant stream of ‘negotiating’ on your prices..You can have a piece wth the tags, showing 198.00…Youll ask 50.00 and someone comes along and SAYS, ILL PAY 20.00 RIGHT NOW….really….gawd….to much work…its to much like Walmart Meets Facebook….
Posh is realllyyyy time consuming! But it is the only app I have had any luck selling anything on. The Low-ballers are supper annoying! Thanks for the comment!
That is so annoying to me when people insult you with garage sale prices. They do the same thing on vinted.com . I mean a lady posted a negative review becasue I wouldnt give her a .99 discount on a super cute fringe purse. She bought at my listed price an then argued with me after the purchase. I dont get it!!!!! I simply said if you didnt want it for that price then why did you buy it? UGHHH!
I dislike Posh’s customer support, or I should say I dislike the fact that there isn’t any. Emails to their support get you a pre-programmed response which shows no one is really is reading them there. I am extremely suspicious of any site that has no way yo talk to someone, and I’m tired of all the “liking” and “sharing”, but no real big sales. Tradesy os my favorite for designer items, but looking for a better place to sell things like in my Ebay store.
The liking and sharing does get tedious. I have had a good customer support experience in the past but I understand your frusteration.
I agree about Poshmark, nice ppl there, great social media type interacting but takes up way too much time. Have more luck onThreadflip, cleaner more streamlined app, the sellers are there to make money and it seems more upscale but don’t expect a lot of social interaction with your followers.
I’ve been on Tradsey.com since June 18th. I have 6 items listed and so far I’ve sold one D&B purse. I do enjoy Poshmark but only when I have the time for all the chatter, negotiating, sharing, liking, following, and online parties. So, yes Poshmark can be quite time consuming. What I like about Tradsey is that once the item is up there seem’s to be less social interaction with the buyer. That purse sold quite easily without someone asking me,” What’s you lowest”, or “Trade”. Which honestly I’ve seen and experienced on Poshmark.
Congrats on your sale! I have yet to have any luck on Tradsey!
I’ve had pretty good luck selling on both Poshmark & Threadflip. I added a couple of things on Bib & Tuck but it seems sooo slow for anything to happen there. I know it was once an invitation only site until they decided to let everyone sell there. Posh is very time consuming in my opinion and with over a million members there, it’s really having lots of luck having potential buyers “see” your listings. I’m partial to Thrradflip because as you pointed out, it’s very streamlined, less interactive and the buyers don’t haggle or lowball you. I can only speak for my personal experiences as I’m sure everyone has had their positives & negatives about all of these online selling Apps 🙂
I tried Bib & Tuck but you don’t get real $$ you get their fake money to buy other things. So if your looking to strictly sell and make some money, like I am, it is not a good option.
Thanks for checking out the blog!
Very informative, thanks everyone..I am on Posh, but, yes, it is too time consuming..I am kinda anal too, so if I share to a party, my closet gets out of order…lol
I just started to sign up with thread flip and they are asking for My contact list…is this safe
Its just to search your contacts to find friends! Totally safe! Good luck on threadflip!
are there any websites for plus size 4 stores like Avenue and Lane Bryant Macy’s plus size beautiful clothes almost a year
I have seen lots of plus sizes on Poshmark! Not sure of any sites just for plus size consignment. Good luck!
Hello everyone. I have an account on Poshmark and I’ve been a member for about 3 years. I’ve sold 36-40 listings. I’ve only made $1000 but that is because I don’t own expensive clothing. Like everyone I started from the bottom, no followers and having to share share share. Eventually, I improved the photos of my listings to be more blogger like and believe this WORKS! People are attracted to an item you can make look like it is something they NEED instead of just another listing that they “like” but eventually gets forgotten in their sea of “My Likes”. Anyway, in the beginning I shared a lot and commented on people who had a lot of followers and I’d get seen just because I was a commentator and they’d click on my name. When I became a Suggested User, I didn’t have to work as hard anymore. I went from 5k followers to 16k in the last six months.. And I didn’t even have to share so much as I did in the beginning. Because Poshmark circulates the “recommended sellers” of suggested users, I will suddenly get 100+ followers in one hour! Also, I like the new feature they have of “offer” which allows buyers to discreetly make an offer only viewable by the buyer and seller. The seller can decline the offer automatically if they believe it is a low ball, but if they think it is fair, they can accept. Because in order to make an offer a buyer is force committed to pay in case if the offer is accepted, the seller doesn’t waste their time with loads of offers of people who are going to buy so I also liked that. I guess the thing about Poshmark is that it does take time and effort into your photos in order to engage customer, but what is one hour of taking many photos in good lighting than being lazy and taking photos at night or with a messy room background? The difference is that buyers will buy what they see and like and will not care much for people who don’t respond back soon or show a poor lifestyle (because no one wants to receive a poorly conditioned item even if the seller says it was in mint condition). I can talk all day about how happy I am with Poshmark but I have a life too lol. I’m a mom with two toddlers and I also go to university full time (junior English Major with Teacher certification, which I do a load of reading and writing). I don’t have babysitters or relatives nearby so believe me that it will feel like posh is wasting your time….until you start making money.
I’m a newbie in Threadflip. I’ve sold 6 items since I first became a member back in September 2014. However, I’m displeased with this app because I’ve had so many issues. First, I had a customer who bought something from me and the status said received. After 3 weeks, the buyer still had not accepted my item and I tried contacting her to see if she was displeased or if she had received at all, but never got a response. I had to contact Threadflip and tell them and thankfully they released the funds. Then my most recent one that I’m currently undergoing is that a buyer bought some boots and that same day I packaged and shipped out. There is no option on Threadflip to put that I have already shipped so one has to basically wait until usps scans the item (because I’m too busy to wait in post office line to get it scanned I just drop it in the parcel box container at post office since shipping is already paid for). Nonetheless, it’s been a whole week and the status on my sold item still reads “ship this item” as if I had never shipped and not to mention that I am able to get on the usps website, input the tracking number and clearly see that it was scanned the day I dropped the box at post office and that since the 11th it has reached California (the destination). The problem there is that I cannot get funds because Threadflip does not acknowledge it has been sent already (even though they were the ones who emailed me the tracking shipping label that I used) which means funds cannot be released to me because the buyer does not have the option to accept the item. Urge! Seriously, I can understand having issues with sellers/buyers, but when it comes from the companies…. I’m not too sure they are reliable any longer. It’s time consuming and frustrating to have to contact the support team all the time for their mistakes and let alone wait a while until they review cases or even respond back. I’m not satisfied. Their selling forum also confuses me. I don’t know how to use the app that well despite how much time I have invested in exploring their options, features, and etc. seriously, it is NOT user friendly. Not to mention that every time I just want to go back one page, it takes me back to the very beginning …..for example….going into the support tab, faq, clicking on an article that relates to your question, and wanting to go back and read another article that seemed similar but instead it takes you all the way back to your main menu.
Thanks for all your helpful tips! I have been doing pretty good on Poshmark but really no traction on Threadflip.
I am so happy Poshmark has rolled out the new offer feature – it really did suck to agree to a lower price then have that user not actually purchase.
Thanks for the article. Threadflip is an amazing site. We have sold on there both as private sellers and through full service. Full service really pulls in a lot of buyers as they promote the items on the homepage and more actively in the trunk shows etc. Its also great for people who have limited or no time to spend trying to actively sell online. The fees are higher but well worth it when you factor time into it. We noticed even our private listings sell a lot more actively when part of our closet is consigned through the full service program due to the advertising. We are professional fashion resellers and have storefronts on pretty much every platform. Threadflip is in our opinion the best overall site. The platform is user friendly and streamlined. Granted our sales would not be what a typical person would likely achieve…and we do sell higher end merchandise but we have sold over $40,000 in goods on Threadflip this year. We have also purchased tons of merchandise to resell from other sellers. One HUGE advantage to Threadflip is they offer buyer discount and sale codes often…and Threadflip eats the savings from their end of the take. We can sell a purse for $5000…the buyer pays $4000 and we still get our 80% as if we sold it for full price. No other online platform offers that kind of buyer incentive.
Hi i use Poshmark, Vinted and have a few items on Threadflip and Tradesey as well. The app i have sold many items on with no fees and it basically sells itself is called mercari.com. its a little like a swapmeet…but if you want cash and quick results…Mercari is it! Offerup is another local way to sell also. Lately ive been using trendsgal.com or swap.com. check them out!!! I also have a store on shopify. Thank you this blog was extremely helpful!!

At this point I’m all about the selling so the fast cash options, while probably less pay out have less hassle. Can’t wait to try theses new sites and review!
Thanks for the additional venue names. The more venues I have, the more items I can sell.
I have so much to sell, that I am overwhelmed. How does Poshmark compare to Tradesy? Which is better to you?
Any additional information you offer will be very much appreciated.
I have not had any luck on Tradsey, unfortunately. Good Luck!
I am in the same boat, I have quiet a lot to sell also and trying to find the best places to sell. I had some great success on Tradesy last year, it took about 3 months to make a first sale and then about once a week or so after that until they scammed me out of $5600, when I called them to release the money in escrow, they suspended my account. They don’t protect sellers on there which is very worrisome. So now I am looking for a better place. SnobSwap seems decent but they only take boutiques now, I will have to actually register as a boutique in order to sell on there. Perhaps we should start our own! lol
